Capital Development Partners — a US industrial real estate developer — has purchased 135 acres of land by the Port of Charleston’s Leatherman Terminal. We’re bringing you the facts on the project FAQ-style so you don’t miss the boat.

What will the land be used for?
The acreage will be developed into the Shipyard Creek Logistics Center, a port-dependent facility with cross dock terminals, container storage, and warehousing and logistics services. Logistic centers handle imports + exports.

How much will the project cost?
Shipyard Creek Logistics Center is expected to cost over $250 million.

What is the Leatherman Terminal, anyway?
The Leatherman Terminal is the country’s newest container terminal in a decade. It opened earlier this year along the Cooper River in North Charleston. The terminal helps handle waterborne commerce in the Lowcountry.

What does this mean for Charlestonians?
The center will create 200 jobs directly and create thousands more indirectly, according to Capital Development Partners. The project will also help increase the port’s efficiency.

How do SC Ports affect the local economy?
According to a 2019 study, port operations have a $7.8 billion economic impact in the Lowcountry.

When will the center open?
The Shipyard Creek Logistics Center is expected to open in 2022.
