Potterheads prepare to cheer for Ashley Cardona, a baker who calls Charleston home + is whipping up some magic on Food Network’s “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” show, where nine teams of pastry chefs and cake artists create desserts inspired by “Harry Potter.” Fun fact: James and Oliver Phelps, aka Fred and George Weasley, are hosting the show. Tune in on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m.; until then, here’s a sneak peek.

We had some time to catch up with Cardona, who sums up her time competing on the show as “phenomenal.” Keep reading for our conversation on the show, baking, and Lowcountry favorites.

What does it mean to be able to represent Charleston on the national stage?
Charleston is the city that my family and I have called home for three years now, and to represent the place that we love and have chosen to raise a family in has been incredible. Being from the South originally, I was excited to bring southern charm and flavors of Charleston to the national stage.

Tell us about your experience.
The entire experience was surreal. From seeing James and Oliver on screen to having lunch with them, viewing the actual sets that were used to film, and bringing the movies to life through chocolate and sugar, it was hard to believe that this was real life. The days were long, but all of the contestants pushed ourselves to our limits to create incredible pieces. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was one that I will never forget.

What are your main takeaways from competing on the show?
I feel truly blessed to showcase my talents and passion for my art form on a national stage intertwined with one of the biggest franchises in the world. I learned so much about myself and met incredible pastry chefs who I am proud to call friends after some fierce competition.

What should folks know about the show?
This is not your average cake competition. There are some serious magicians in the world of pastry and cake decorating that are coming together to create enchanting pieces.

How would you describe your baking style?
I have training in modern French technique and roots in Southern flavor. I have merged the two of those together to create technically creative and artistic desserts that have a deep sense of nostalgia hitting your palette.

What’s your favorite thing to bake?
At home, brownies with my two daughters. Professionally, anything I get to put a creative spin on.

Who is your favorite Harry Potter character?
Luna, I love how she’s not afraid to be herself and embrace every aspect of who she is. I would love to do that a bit more in my life.

What ingredients are always stocked in your pantry?
A great quality chocolate like Valrhona and a reliable flour like King Arthur.

What’s your favorite fall flavor?
My favorite flavors are changing every season, but right now, I would have to say that maple has stolen my heart for this fall.

What’s your favorite Charleston restaurant?
Me and my husband’s favorite date night restaurant right now is Muse; we love some Mediterranean flavors, and the restaurant itself being in an old home just feels quintessential Charleston to me.
