So many things make Charleston, Charleston — and history is undoubtedly one of those things. Recently, 27 projects were recognized for playing a role in preserving history.

Fun fact: This year, the Preservation Society handed out its 1,500th award since the program began in 1953.

The Preservation Society of Charleston hosted the Carolopolis Awards — honoring residential, commercial, and institutional projects that help buildings maintain the character + authenticity of the Charleston area. The projects honored this year are located across downtown, North Charleston, Sullivan’s Island, and include the first-ever awarded buildings on Daniel Island and Folly Beach.

There are five areas for which the Carolopolis plaques are awarded.

Both private and public projects are recognized in these awards. President + CEO of the Preservation Society, Brian Turner, said, “This year’s Carolopolis Awards highlights that projects big and small can show careful dedication to preservation best practices.”

“Charleston is known as the birthplace of the American historic preservation movement... through the Carolopolis program, Charleston continues leading the national conversation about how the building trades can adapt to put an emphasis on repair, rather than replacement or demolition,” said Turner.

Correction

We were so excited to tell you about the SC Department of Agriculture’s first Fresh on the Menu People’s Choice Awards — we were typing too quickly and had a typo. So let’s try this again: Stono Market & Tomato Shed Cafe and Fleet Landing tied for first place in the Lowcountry, both recognized for their use of local ingredients. Congratulations.

🍴 New menu alert

You’ll have to get your own order of pancakes, these look too good to share. | Photo by Andrew Cebulka
The Dewberry is unveiling not one but two new menus for guests to enjoy.
  • The Citrus Club’s menu will include small plates and shareables featuring classic seafood dishes with a twist, which pairs perfectly with its incredible views.
  • The Living Room menu is meant to offer the comfort of one’s own living room, featuring familiar dishes with an elevated twist. We’re eyeing the buttermilk pancakes with blueberry compote and Meyer lemon curd — yum.
The new menus come from The Dewberry’s newly announced culinary team led by Executive Chef Alex Ursprung. City Editor Callie here — last September, Erika and I had the privilege of trying some of Ursprung’s dishes at a seek peak + introductory multi-course dinner hosted by The Dewberry, and all I can say is the Lowcountry is in for a treat.
