2,000. That’s how many backpacks Trident United Way is aiming to stock with school supplies during this year’s Ready, Set, Thrive School Support Drive.

On average, school supplies for an elementary school student can total $100+. When you factor in costs for uniforms, lunchboxes, school fees, and more, the total cost per student can double or even triple. This collection drive is aiming to ease that burden for local families.

How you can help: A backpack and supply bundle is less than $20, and donating online is quick + easy. The final day for the online drive is tomorrow (Friday, July 18).

The Wrap

Today’s edition by: Callie

Home sweet home, a bottlenose dolphin dubbed Luckyis back swimming freely in the May River. Lucky became trapped in a neighborhood lagoon, likely entering through a culvert during high tide after a heavy rain. As the water receded, she was unable to escape. Thanks to a coordinated effort by the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, Bluffton Township Fire District, and neighbors, Lucky was safely returned to deeper waters.

Reminder: Marine mammals are protected under federal law, so if you see one in need, reach out to the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network.
A group of marine rescuers and firefighters work together to carry a stranded dolphin in a stretcher from shallow water. The team later poses smiling on a dock after the rescue mission.
