Move aside, Thin Mints

What if we turned a Huguenot torte into a cookie? | Photo via Flickr
Wake up and smell the flour (and sugar). Girl Scout Cookie season is upon us — and our local council, the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, are slinging sweet treats around town.

One question: After the Thin Mints, Samoas, and Tagalongs are all gone, what will we eat? In that disastrous scenario, we’d love to see these Charleston-inspired cookie ideas come to life:
  • A Charleston Chewy would be an homage to the famous chocolate bar, named after the dance, but we’re claiming it for this exercise. It would have a chocolate outer layer filled with nougat.
  • Our next idea is an easy one: Add benne wafers to the menu. The sweet, buttery, sesame-infused cookie would be a great addition to any Girl Scout’s cart.
  • Our final invention is the Huguenot Torte Crunch, an adaptation of the classic Lowcountry dessert. Combine apples, toasted pecans, and plenty of sugar for Charleston in a bite.
Any other ideas for localized Girl Scout Cookies? Let us know.

Charleston Southern University will launch its third doctoral program, a PhD in Counseling Education and Supervision, in fall 2026.

Offered primarily online, the program is designed for future counselor educators, researchers, supervisors, and leaders.

The College of Health Sciences includes four graduate programs:
  • Physician Assistant
  • Physical Therapy
  • Clinical Counseling
  • And the new PhD
Plus, undergraduate programs in kinesiology and public health.

A new early acceptance pathway for future Doctor of Physical Therapy students is upcoming.

“We’re actively exploring opportunities to expand our current programs while adding new ones to address critical workforce needs,” says Dr. Gabby Poole, dean of the College of Health Sciences.

“Our goal is to remain responsive and innovative — creating pathways that support students and the health systems that rely on well-trained professionals.”

The highly-selective PhD enrolls up to 12 students per year, requires 60 credit hours, and features an embedded dissertation.

Program Chair Dr. Angela Weaver says graduates will be prepared to lead with wisdom, competence, and Christian character.

News Notes

Mansion Monday

A museum that looks like the Death Star, Africa’s tallest building, and the end of a 144-year project. Those are three architectural marvels on the radar heading into 2026. Here in Charleston, this recently listed James Island home is a marvel of its own. (CNN)

Read

Reading is on the rise, with online searches for “good books” recently hitting an all time high. If you’re trying to turn more pages in 2026, read some classic literature, or find out what this fictional hockey romance thing is all about, Charleston’s independent bookstores are the perfect places to start.

Kids

Psst… Kids’ Night is tonight at East Bay Deli’s University Boulevard location, 5-8 p.m. Enjoy hot cocoa, s’mores, and balloon twisting during this fun, family-friendly evening. Can’t make it? Join the festivities at Summerville tomorrow, Mount Pleasant on Wednesday, or upcoming dates at Moncks Corner and Savannah Highway.*

Eat

Pizzerias aren’t ruling the restaurant world like they used to. After hitting a record high in 2019, the number of pizza restaurants in the US has steadily declined, with coffee shops and Mexican restaurants now outnumbering them. Slice lovers, consider this your cue to support local pizza purveyors. (Wall Street Journal)

Fun Fact

How long can a Twinkie last? Back in 1976, a Maine high school science teacher set out to answer that question, and the sweet treat remains unblemished in its glass case 50 years later. We’ve got that beat in Charleston — some of our city’s oldest businesses have been around for much longer. (Bangor Daily News)

On This Day

Today, Jan. 12, 60 years ago, the first-ever TV episode of “Batman” aired. Since then, Bruce Wayne’s adventures have become commonplace in popular media. Did you know: Charleston has appeared 20+ times in DC comics throughout the decades.

The Buy

Our favorite car accessory: a portable air pump and power bank. Never worry about low tire pressure again with this lightweight device that inflates tires while providing a real-time pressure display. Plus, it features a flashlight + flashing SOS mode for added peace of mind during a breakdown or emergency.

The Wrap

For what it’s worth, Samoas are the superior Girl Scout Cookie, in my not-so-humble opinion. I already have some loaded into my cart and they will be on their way to my doorstep imminently.

We’ve got the scoop on all of Charleston’s best treats.
