Plowing ahead: GrowFood Carolina is supporting local farmers and eating fresh

GrowFood Carolina, which now represents 80+ SC farmers, helps them put their produce in grocery stores and local restaurants.

Remember Shuler Peach Company from Peach Week? They’ve dropped off tons of peaches at the GrowFood warehouse this season.

Love supporting local businesses and eating fresh? Well, let us introduce you to GrowFood Carolina, a program of the Coastal Conservation League. The initiative was created with two goals in mind: protecting South Carolina’s small, family farms and putting fresh local produce in the hands of community members.

Here’s how it works: Local farmers grow fresh fruits and vegetables, then bring their produce to the GrowFood warehouse downtown. From there, the goods are stored, sold, and delivered to restaurants and retailers — and eventually to you.

Where can you find local produce around town? Restaurants all over the Charleston area, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and the College of Charleston.

Fun Fact: Since its opening, GrowFood has grown from supporting five farmers to more than 85, and returning almost $5.5 million to local farmers.
