What if... You designed Charleston’s next major improvement project

Plot twist — you’re in charge, we want to know what improvement projects you’d plan for the Holy City.

Modern urban street scene with a large building featuring tall windows on the left. People walk along the sidewalk. Trees line the sunny street on the right.

The project’s current design meets all zoning requirements.

Last month, the city’s Board of Architectural Review — L granted conceptual approval for a proposed MUSC sky bridge to better serve healthcare workers, patients, and students during flooding. The 25-ft-tall bridge, suspended 18 ft above ground, would connect four buildings. The next step for the project is preliminary design review.

This got us thinking. What other improvements would you like to see around the Charleston area? We want to hear everything from practical options like bridge and road expansions to outside-the-box ideas like adding a row of boat homes on Shem Creek to help add more housing here in the Lowcountry. Let us know.
