A peek into North Charleston’s future

A peek into North Charleston’s future: Live, work, play developments

On Thursday, Dec. 14, a major North Charleston project received a final development contract vote, moving plans for the live-work-play development forward.

The development team selected for Battery Park is also developing a nearby site known as Navy Yard Charleston.

Now that the wheels are moving, it may be time to take a step back: What is Battery Park, exactly? Is it related to Navy Yard Charleston? What can we expect from all of this? Allow us to provide a glance into the expansive project.

Battery Park 🤝 Navy Yard Charleston

Battery Park is the name of a 50-acre riverfront development project just north of Noisette Creek, with the goal of creating a central business district. ~23 of the 50 acres will become public spaces + parks, 1,400+ residential units, and a mix of commercial uses.

The Navy Yard Charleston plan is a redevelopment project on the northern end of the former naval base. It’s projected to encompass ~3.5 million sqft of commercial and residential space and over 2,600 residential units across 85 acres.

The combined North Charleston projects add up to ~135 acres and will work in tandem to bring housing, jobs, businesses, and more to the area.

What’s to come for Battery Park

  • A civic pavilion, aka 1601 Pavilion, connecting Noisette Bridge to Battery Park and serving as a market hall or event space, plus a lawn area. Anticipated completion in 2025.
  • An activated waterfront area featuring live, work, and play spaces with a nod to the industrial naval shipyard past.
  • Pier Alpha, a space for recreation, taxi connection, boat docking, and dining.
  • 1,400 residential units (17% workforce housing)
  • ~222,000 sqft of retail and restaurant space
  • ~450,000 sqft of office space

City Editor Erika here, feeling inspired after experiencing the Introductory Nutrition Evaluation with registered dietitian Lauren Zimmerman at Synchronicity in Mount Pleasant. This wellness center is designed to promote mental well-being through physical experiences, nutrition programs, and community-based challenges.

Lauren Zimmerman is a registered dietitian who has been in practice for 10 years and has been the Lead Dietitian at Synchronicity for the past four years. She specializes in plant-based nutrition, gut health, and helping people create a sustainable + enjoyable lifelong nutrition plan (Pro tip: Check out her latest nutrition content on her Instagram and via Synchronicity).

What we tried:

After taking a tour of Synchronicity and snacking on delicious trail mix from the demo kitchen, I met with Zimmerman for my 45-minute nutrition evaluation — a free session that can be done in person or virtually now through Friday, Jan. 5 (sessions must be scheduled within this time frame).

First, I removed my shoes + socks and stepped on the Inbody 770 body analyzer. After following Zimmerman’s instructions, the analysis was over after several minutes. Then my results were printed immediately, and we started our consultation.

We discussed my nutritional history and individualized testing recommendations and made some goals for an actionable plan. I learned how nutrition is essential to mind + body wellness and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to craft a plan with Zimmerman.

My personal recommendation was to consume less sugar in my regular diet (think: swapping out sugar-filled juices with whole fruit). I can also add more plant-based foods, too, like whole grains, seeds, and nuts. I also learned I can explore low-impact exercises like Pilates. Zimmerman shared that exercise is all about finding what you enjoy + what works for you and your schedule, so it’s easier to be consistent.

The AAA Four Diamond hotel is tucked in the heart of one of Charleston’s oldest neighborhoods, established in the 1700s by Lord Anson, a British Royal Navy Officer. The upgrades have revitalized the space while honoring its rich history. Built as a stationer’s warehouse in approx. 1901, developers have made changes that balance its historic roots with modern comfort.

“Throughout the renovation process, our goal was to unearth the property’s rich history and distinctive character that resides within its wall. The property now balances historic and timeless charm with elegance and modern comfort,” said General Manager Carrie Huston in a recent press release.

The boutique 45-room property now features upgraded indoor and outdoor spaces, including an expanded bar + lounge, a new rooftop garden, and fireplaces. The property will also feature a “Poker Room” discreetly positioned past a secret bookcase enclave, paying homage to the folklore that Lord Anson became the rightful owner of the Ansonborough neighborhood after winning a high-profile poker game.

Happy Monday. We’ve survived another rainy weekend, but on the bright side, it wasn’t snow. Although, I think a little snow would be fun... but just for a day.
