We’re exploring the history of North Charleston’s former navy yard + naval base and sharing the plans for how parts of it are being redeveloped.
The Charleston Naval Base operated from 1901-1996 and played a crucial role in US defense. It also significantly impacted the local economy, provided jobs to thousands, and was the largest employer in SC into the 1990s.
WWI and WW II: During both World Wars, the base performed shipbuilding and repairs, and acted as a training site.
Cold War: The base becomes a center for nuclear submarine operations.
Closure: In 1996, the base was closed due to post-Cold War defense budget cuts and its closing significantly impacted Charleston’s economy.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission acquire property on Wallace Creek
Community engagement opportunities will be available through surveys and public meetings. | Photo provided by Charleston County Park and Recreation
Charleston County Park and Recreation recently acquired the 19-acre Sea Island Small Farmers Cooperative property in Hollywood ~40 minutes from Charleston on Wallace Creek.
There are plans to transform this site into a public park, emphasizing its historical and cultural significance.
Historical Significance
The property has ties to the 1739 Stono Rebellion and was an area in the 20th century where Black farmers could sell their locally grown produce.
Looking Ahead
A recent study has recommended further archaeological work to protect and preserve certain areas before opening the site to the public. The property will undergo a master planning process that includes community engagement.
Potential features of the site include historical interpretation, water access for paddle sports and fishing, scenic water views, and a connection to the East Coast Greenway.
