We’re exploring the history of North Charleston’s former Navy Yard + Naval Base and giving you a look at the plans for how parts of it are being redeveloped.

The Charleston Naval Base operated from 1901-1996 and played a crucial role in US defense. It also significantly impacted the local economy, provided jobs to thousands, and was the largest employer in SC into the 1990s.

  • WWI and II: During both World Wars, the base performed shipbuildingand repairs, and acted as a training site.
  • Cold War: The base becomes a center for nuclear submarine operations.
  • Closure: In 1996, the base was closed due to post-Cold War defense budget cuts and its closing significantly impacted Charleston’s economy.
