Want to know if you’re a trendsetter, savvy suburbanite, or a comfortable empty nester?

You can discover what your neighborhood trends say about you with Esri’s interactive Tapestry map. The tech company analyzes zip code data to define the characteristics of individuals in neighborhoods using a process called segmentation.

How it works

This tool sorts areas into 67 unique categories, or segments, based on demographics and socioeconomic characteristics such as age, income + population — basically, it tells us generally who we are and what we have in common with our neighbors.

Users can input zip codes or click around the map to explore segments that best describe a particular area. In most cases, the results show the top 3 segments that define a neighborhood.

For example, you’ll discover groups like urban chic (professionals living “sophisticated, exclusive lifestyles”) and the young and restless (young, educated workers employed in professional or technical occupations)

Charleston’s tapestry

  • The city’s downtown core area is largely defined as city commons (single-person households with jobs in office and administrative support) + college towns (college students studying during the week but making time to enjoy the fashion boutiques and bars in the area)
  • For the 29492 zip code in the Daniel Island area, about 50% of residents are considered urban chic professionals that live a sophisticated, exclusive lifestyle with a median age of 43-years-old.
  • Avondale in West Ashley’s 29407 ZIP code indicates that 13% of residents are classified as old and newcomers, 11% parks and rec, and 9% are labeled young and restless.
  • The 29482 ZIP code that makes up Sullivan’s Island is considered mostly top tier and residents earn more than 3 times the US median household income.

Outside of the segmentation tool, you can do a deeper dive into trending habits based on zip code, right down to shopping preferences + credit card debt.
