8 local college courses we would take in Spring 2019

When I was an undergrad at Niagara University (all the way up north in Niagara Falls– yes, by Canada), some of my favorite classes were the ones that weren’t part of my major. America’s Music let me research the life of Patsy Cline, Animal Ethics taught me about where my food actually comes from, + Studio Art allowed me to color with crayons in my 20’s.

Taking classes outside of a designated major can help students discover new interests, have fun while grinding day + night toward their degree, + meet new people outside of their program. Don’t worry parents– I have a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration so I promise there’s some justification for allowing space for these types of classes in their schedule. 😉

While exploring art + philosophy was enjoyable for me, some local institutions have classes that like Tailgating 101 and American Popular Culture that I totally wish I could take now.

Here are eight *fun* classes students are taking this semester:

🎓SOCI 300 - American Pop Culture | Charleston Southern University | Students are introduced to the analysis of pop culture in the U.S. including areas of advertising, TV, film, music, + the internet.

🎓 ASTR 205 - Intelligent Life in the Universe | College of Charleston | Students explore the possibility of extraterrestrial life– i.e. aliens, the interrelations between astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and philosophy, and the implications of an extraterrestrial encounter.

🎓 RUST 250 - Vampires | College of Charleston | This Russian Studies course dives into vampirism through European literature– exploring the characteristics of vampires from not having reflections to social anxieties, + more.

🎓 BADM 428 - Technology and Entrepreneurship | The Citadel | Students explore the development of technology-based businesses, how to use technology to market a new business, + digital portfolio development.

🎓 FNAR 307 - Digital Forensic Photography | The Citadel | This Fine Arts course teaches students methods of recording crime scene evidence through the use of a digital camera + how to use digital evidence in court (both military + civilian).

🎓 HRT 269 - Edible Landscaping | Trident Technical College | Students develop business strategies to help market and sell fruits, vegetables, + herbs– including organic, hydroponic, commercial + residential.

🎓 HRTM 476 - Craft Beer | University of South Carolina | Students study craft beer trends, countries of origin, styles, food flavor pairings, + best business practices. (Of course, they must be 21+ to enroll).

🎓 HRTM 168 - Tailgating 101 | University of South Carolina | Students learn the basics of crafting tailgating dishes– from grilling + frying techniques to food safety.
