Seen a beautiful, new, glass-covered building going up along the Ashley River recently? No, it’s not luxury apartments or offices – it’s a state-of-the-art hospital for children + women.

Construction for the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital & Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion began in the summer of 2016 + will open in 2020. Before the hospital officially opens, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look:

By the numbers:

  • 624,000: Square footage of the 11-story facility
  • $390 million: Total cost of construction, with $20 million donated by namesake Shawn Jenkins
  • 250: Licensed beds in the hospital, a 20% increase from the old facility
  • 29: Mother + baby postpartum rooms in the Labor and Delivery Unit, with 7 couplet care rooms where mothers + newborns can recover togetheR
  • 80+: Licensed beds + single patient family rooms in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (the largest in S.C.)
  • 22,000 lb.: Weight of the rooftop helio-pad, engineered to accommodate the Coast Guard’s Jayhawk helicopter for emergency + disaster situations.

Designed with patients + families in mind:

  • Centrally-located cafeteria so families can be near their children’s rooms during meals
  • Access to kitchens, laundry rooms, showers, lounges + more
  • Wireless capability to ensure connection to outside sources of health info
  • Multiple light-filled play spaces for pediatric patients, including a playroom in the atrium

The beam with the American Flag and Palmetto Tree attached to it is raised and ready to be bolted in on the roof of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion during the Topping Out Celebration Wednesday, October 25th.
