$650+ million. That’s how much unclaimed money the South Carolina Treasurer is holding onto. And some of it might belong to you. Even better, it takes but a second to check whether you’re owed any cash – and just a few minutes more to claim what’s yours.

Anyone with a last-known address in South Carolina may have unclaimed money that the state is holding. It could be an old utility deposit you forgot about or an old payroll check that didn’t make it to an address before you moved.

If a company tries to send the funds but it doesn’t make it, that money goes to The South Carolina Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Program.

Then, the state tries to find the rightful owner.

If that person has died, the appropriate family member can claim it. There is no time limit for residents to make claims.

So far, S.C. has returned more than $318 million to rightful owners or their heirs.

OK, so how do I search for my money?

  1. Click here for the state’s unclaimed property search.💰
  2. Enter your first + last name or your business name.
  3. Optional: Next pick the city you want to search.
  4. Search the list of names to see if your name is there. If it is, click your name and see how much you are owed. If it’s not, you can try to search for another city or last name. 🕵️
  5. If you find any owed money for you, a client, or a loved one who is deceased, you can file a claim. This involves filling out a short form with your personal information + uploading any relevant documentation.
  6. From there, state officials go through a due diligence process to make sure the right person is claiming the money. You will be given a claim ID to monitor your claim’s status while you wait to receive the money you’re owed.⌚
