Celebrate Earth Day in Charleston, SC with #BuyLocalBuyGreenCHS

You know we’re all about supporting our local businesses in the Holy City, which is why we’re excited for Earth Day this Fri., April 22. 🌎

This year’s Earth Day initiative is centered around investing in our planet — and there are lots of ways buying locally supports sustainability. To promote this goal within our community, we are introducing you to our #BuyLocalBuyGreenCHS campaign.

To celebrate the global initiative, we are challenging youand ourselves — to only shop locally for one week. Or, at least try to swap out a few basic purchases with local options.

What would this look like? Think: Starting your morning with a trip to Gnome Cafe, stopping by the Sea Island Farmers Market for local produce, or perusing spring fashion at Consign Charleston.

We want to follow along with your journey, as well as share ours with you. To do so, we are asking you to share photos of your local purchases, shopping sprees, or other Earth Day activities on social media using the hashtag #BuyLocalBuyGreenCHS. Throughout the week, we will spotlight what our community is up to in our newsletters + social feeds.

Need some inspiration? Here are some local, sustainable recommendations to switch up your weekly routine.

Start your day with a local caffeine boost. City Editors Tatum and Lexa love exploring coffee shops and cafés around town, and plan to hit OwlBear Café soon for cold brew.

Once you clean out your closet for spring, pop into Ensemble Consignment Boutique to check out gently-used items.

Fridge running low? Head out to The Veggie Bin to grab some local produce, or get farm fresh eggs and local raw honey delivered with Charleston Farm Fresh. If you enjoy cooking, we recommend adding zucchini, okra, tomatoes, and eggplants to your cart to make Southern ratatouille for dinner.

If you opt to dine out, we hear the okra gumbo with blue crab, shrimp, and Carolina Gold middlins from The Ordinary and Ravioli Doppio with mushrooms, onions, ricotta, and charred scallion butter from Wild Olive are must-haves.
