Hey Charleston, Tatum here, bringing you another edition of the Discover Charleston series. When I moved to Harleston Village, I knew Colonial Lake would become one of my favorite places to spend time in the city.
As I settled into my new neighborhood, I found out that the lake is a man-made saltwater tidal pond that fish + seabirds call home. Colonial Lake is often bustling with joggers, fisherman, dog walkers, visitors, and locals, and feels like a living, breathing part of the city.
I always discover something new when I visit. Yesterday, it struck me just how colorful the lake is this time of year. The light blue, sparkling waters are surrounded by a half-mile trail that winds through the fall foliage. The trees are burnt orange and flowers add pops of color to the greenery.
Historic homes on Rutledge Avenue face the calm waters, adding splashes of pink and lavender. Speckled shepherds, yellow labs, and curly brown doodles trot around the lake with their owners. Seabirds are gray and white smudges on the vivid blue sky.
I’m lucky to live in this beautiful neighborhood, and to be just a stone’s throw from the vibrant Colonial Lake. Learn about the lake’s long history here.
