Life imitates art, and so does fashion. Don’t believe us? See it for yourself — The Gibbes Museum of Art is debuting the world premiere of “Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Design.”
From Friday, Jan. 31, until Sunday, April 27, see Barrett Barrera Projects’ paired with art from the Museum’s collection. “The dialogues between each artwork and garment create a striking visual courtship between the two art forms. By pairing these works from our Museum’s permanent collection with the fashions from Barrett Barrera Projects, together we are taking the phrase Statement Pieces to a whole new level,” said Angela Mack, the President and CEO of the Gibbes Museum, in a press release.
Here’s a sneak peek. Pictured above is Merton Daniel Simpson’s 1991 painting “Grand Dance,” paired with the Alexander McQueen moth print silk dress from the fashion house’s Spring + Summer 2010 Collection. Simpson was born in Charleston in 1928 and helped bring African art into mainstream culture. He opened an art gallery in New York, introducing tribal and African art to museums and collectors.
