The City of Charleston demolished the abandoned Ryan’s on St. Andrews Boulevard in West Ashley. The demolition is part of a public-private partnership between the city and Charleston-based developer Gramling Brothers.

After sitting vacant for several years, the deconstruction of the restaurant began Monday, Feb. 24, with plans to clear the site quickly.

City officials emphasized their commitment to revitalizing the area, calling this a key step in their strategy to make West Ashley safer and more vibrant. “This is an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to revitalize West Ashley,” said Mayor William Cogswell in a press release. City officials compared the project to the redevelopment of Sumar Street, also in West Ashley.

Now, it’s your turn. If you could decide, what would you like to see on the former Ryan’s site? Let us know — your response might be featured in an upcoming newsletter.
