June 17 is the seventh anniversary of the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston. Boeing recently made a $500,000 donation to support the Emanuel Nine Memorial — which is expected to break ground in early 2023.

The memorial, which will be located on Mother Emanuel AME Church grounds on Calhoun Street, honors the nine victims and five survivors of the tragedy and is intended to bring joy to the community + promote anti-racism education.

The memorial will feature:

  • A courtyard
  • Two fellowship benches
  • A marble fountain
  • A survivor’s garden
  • An altar

Boeing’s donation was announced by The Mother Emanuel Memorial Foundation Board, a Charleston community partnership with Mother Emanuel AME Church. The fundraising goal for the project is $20 million to create and maintain the memorial and support outreach and initiatives.
