Honoring first responders and remembering the fallen

We asked our social media followers in the midst of the storm last Thursday what they realized they were grateful for since the hurricane temporarily eliminated some basic, everyday things. With answers like electricity, WiFi, Netflix + being able to take your dog out, the CHS streets were being flooded with water while our DMs were being flooded with thankfulness + positivity.

One of the most popular answers was our local first responders who worked night + day to keep the city and its residents safe during the dangerous storm.

While we are thankful for our first responders every day, we are especially thankful for their selfless acts of service when we are in need of it the most. Today marks the 18th anniversary of the fatal attack on September 11, 2001, and while we honor the fallen, we also remember the first responders who risked their lives to help in every way possible.

Here is a list of a few events taking place honoring local first responders + servicemen and remembering the fallen:

5th Annual Charleston 9 Memorial Poker Run | Sat., Sept. 14 | 10 a.m. | Lowcountry Harley-Davidson, 4707 Dorchester Rd., North Charleston | $5+ | A bike ride through the city benefitting the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team.

9/11 Memorial Hockey Game | Sat., Sept. 14 | 2:45 p.m. | Carolina Ice Palace, 7665 Northwoods Blvd., North Charleston | $5 | The Charleston Enforcers + Charleston Firefighters will go head-to-head to raise money for the 9/11 Heroes Run.

The David Bourne 9/11 Memorial Ride | Sat., Sept. 21 | 11 a.m. | Lowcountry Harley-Davidson, 4707 Dorchester Rd., North Charleston | Free | Self-guided ride with stops at North Charleston Fire Department, Charleston Fire Department + more.

8th Annual 9/11 Heroes Run | TBD* | 235 Seven Farms Dr., Daniel Island | $31.50+ | Support the fallen + those still serving by attending the 8th Annual 9/11 Heroes Run. Proceeds benefit local heroes + Travis Manion Foundation – a foundation that supports veterans + their families.

Vet Fest Music Festival Tickets | TBD* | Danny Jones Park, 1455 Monitor St., North Charleston | $15 | This music festival will raise money for emergency relief + mental health care to veterans in need.
