Charleston Area Model Railroad Club provides fun activities for those interested in trains

All aboard. City Editor Erika here. After recently attending a media event, I learned about the Charleston Area Model Railroad Club (special shout out to Jenny from Charleston Living Magazine) and had to do some more digging. Keep reading to see what I found.

What is it?

The Charleston Area Model Railroad Club, or CAMRC, was created in 1983 and formally known as Charleston’s Best Friend. The club comprises members with special skills and interests in model railroading but also welcomes new members interested in a new hobby. The nonprofit aims to create an opportunity for fun, learning, and sharing with others.

CAMRC is located inside Citadel Mall in Ste. A160 (outside Dillard’s mall entrance) and is open Tuesday and Thursday, 5-8 p.m., Saturday, 12-4 p.m. + Sunday, 1-4 p.m. The space has three big operating layouts with scenic views that have interactive buttons to push. Pro tip: You can visit for free.

Upcoming event:

Its annual train show will be on Saturday, Jan. 6 + Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Exchange Hall in the Gold Room at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds (9850 Hwy. 78, Ladson). This train show is an opportunity to see model scales or displays of various sizes, plus vendors to shop from. Admission is $10. Stay updated on the event’s Facebook page.
