Have you ever thought about adopting a pet, only to realize it wasn’t the right time? Don’t worry — there are still ways to help make a difference.

This year, Charleston Animal Society is celebrating 150 years of service, and we spoke to their team to learn how the community can help animals in need, especially this holiday season, even if adoption isn’t an option right now.

What are ways the community can support Charleston Animal Society if they cannot adopt?

  • Share adoptable animals on your social media. Pro tip: Furry friends are shared are Instagram and Facebook.
  • Similar to a “Hollywood agent for the stars,” become an ambassador to animals find their furever homes.
  • Foster an animal — especially a dog — to give them more reassurance and love until they find a home.
  • Volunteer to comfort and exercise the animals.

What specific challenges is Charleston Animal Society currently facing, and how can the community help — especially during the holiday season?

There aren’t enough homes for medium and large dogs. The sheltering system will collapse without widespread and meaningful spay + neuter programs.

You can help by writing to local newspapers and elected officials to push for incentivized spay and neuter programs for at-risk dogs and mandatory programs for the most overpopulated breeds. You can also donate to the Charleston Animal Society so that it can continue caring for the overwhelming number of animals entering the shelter. The Animal Society takes in well over 90% of animals in Charleston County.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

All three actions, adopting, volunteering, and donating, comprise how animals are saved. Each is critical as a stand-alone action, but together, the three actions lead to successful outcomes for animals.
