Revamp in Progress: A look at the proposed future of the Mount Pleasant Towne Centre

Plans to add additional housing, a hotel, office space, and green space to a popular Mount Pleasant shopping center are moving forward. In a recent planning committee meeting, the board gave the plans conceptual approval.

The plans are a key topic of discussion as the shopping center’s owners have expressed concern about the long-term stability of some of its large tenants, like Belk and Regal Cinema. To clarify, these businesses aren’t planning to close, but they have experienced financial challenges in recent years. While they may be around for years to come, the owners want to create an enticing space for potential future tenants to prevent long-term vacancies, like the empty Bed Bath & Beyond space.

2025 Mount Pleasant Towne Centre plan

  • Maximum of 170,114 sqft added retail space
  • Maximum of 87,200 sqft of additional office
  • Maximum of 421 residential units
  • Maximum of 188 additional hotel rooms
  • Parking garages

Board recommended changes

  • Reducing the proposed building heights to a maximum of 55 feet
  • A minimum of 60,000 sqft of family entertainment space
  • Requiring two attainable housing units for every six market-rate residential units
  • Minimum of 14% green space

Town leaders say traffic and school zoning concerns will be addressed before anything is finalized. The next planning committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m. in the Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex. Can’t make it? Tune in to the town’s YouTube.
