One of the questions that MUSC Health gets a lot from locals is, “how can I volunteer?” There are lots of ways – in 2018, 1,195 volunteers contributed hours to MUSC, clocking 100,154 hours of service across 15 locations within the MUSC Health System.

To help you figure out where you fit in, we’ve put together a list of 5 of the coolest volunteer opportunities at MUSC Health.

Note: MUSC Health will be accepting new volunteer applications Nov. 4-8, with the next orientation on Dec. 4 (12-4 p.m.), held in the main hospital’s 2W Amphitheater. Orientation requirements here.

  1. Pet Therapy Program 🐶
  • For dogs + their adult owners
  • Visit bedsides of patients with registered therapy dogs (see if your dog would be a good fit here)
  • Last year, 52 teams provided 2,779 hours of tail-wagging happiness through 5,623 bedside visits
  1. Institute of Psychiatry 🎲
  • For adult volunteers
  • Visit with Psychiatry patients and engage in activities like card games, board games, watching TV, conversation, etc.; also assist staff with errands/activities
  1. Coffee/Tea Cart ☕
  • For adult volunteers
  • Take a cart full of coffee, tea, hot chocolate or lemonade, snacks, candy + other treats to serve to patients, visitors and hospital staff in the Main Hospital + Ashley River Tower
  1. Wayfinding/Patient Transport 👋
  • For adult volunteers
  • Greet hospital visitors (with a big smile) and help them find their way around the hospital (which can feel huge and intimidating); also assist with escorting patients in wheelchairs to their destination or to their transportation home during discharge
  1. Junior Volunteer Candy Striper Program 🍭
  • For high school students ages 14-18
  • Learn, help others, build friendships, and give back while providing assistance to departments that could use extra sets of hands; also helps make the hospital a little happier + friendlier
