Applying for the SC Safe Home Mitigation Grant Program

We’re sure you heard about the tropical depression that formed off of the SC coast. Good thing applications for the SC Safe Home Mitigation Grant Program opens this Thursday.

What does that mean? For those living in coastal counties that might experience property damage during hurricane season (which is now until Tues., Nov. 30), these $5,000 grants can take care of the cost of a new roof.

The program is administered by the SC Department of Insurance and helps to make homes more resistant to hurricane + high wind damage. The department also helps applicants determine their estimated grant award through an award estimator.

How do you qualify for a grant? The roof can’t have existing previous damage + the home and homeowner together must not have previously received and utilized a SC Safe Home grant.

Why should you act fast? Last year, all the funds were claimed within 3 hours.

A person who owns + occupies a detached single-family home can apply. Income is not considered for these awards. A person who owns + occupies a detached single-family home can apply.

In addition to other coastal counties, the grant is available in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley.
