Now we’re cooking. The 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Award Nominees were revealed on Tuesday, March 31. The Holy City has two spots still in the spotlight, narrowed down from eight semifinalists this year.

Here’s who’s still representing the 843 in the prestigious foodie awards.

Best New Restaurant | Merci
European-inspired restaurant tucked in the Harleston Village neighborhood, offers seasonal plates highlighting local purveyors. Be warned, you could fall in love with something new every visit, because Chef Michael and Courtney Zentner’s menu changes daily.

Outstanding Bakery | Weltons Tiny Bakeshop
Craving something freshly baked? Whether it’s cookies, biscuits, or croissants, this downtown spot has you covered. Fun fact: The bakeshop is expanding to make room for a full coffee program and seating so you can sit and enjoy your bakery bites.

The awards ceremony to reveal the winners will take place at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on Monday, June 15.
