Honoring our Lowcountry heroes

It’s Memorial Day, Charleston. Lest we forget while we’re lounging in the pool with a beer in hand, the reason for today’s holiday is to remember + honor U.S. military veterans who died while serving their country.

Want to impress your neighbors while you’re on the grill tonight? Here are some cool facts about Memorial Day: 🇺🇲

  • Memorial Day used to be called “Decoration Day,” back when it was established post-Civil War
  • The date of Memorial Day was moved from its specific, traditional date of May 30 to the last Monday in May when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968. Basically to create three-day weekends. Thank you.
  • Memorial Day became an official U.S. federal holiday in 1971.

And if you’re looking for ways to celebrate today, here’s what’s going on in CHS: 🎆

  • Dedicate a flag at the Charleston Field of Honor. Proceeds will support emergency relief for local veterans + their families in crisis. Purchase a flag here. The flags will be prominently displayed at the Piccolo Spoleto Memorial Day Concert (more on the performance below).
  • Get up + get moving on a scenic route through Daniel Island at the Memorial Day Trail 5K. Proceeds will be donated the Semper Fi Fund. Get running here.
  • The Charleston Men’s Chorus will perform a Memorial Day Concert as part of Piccolo Spoleto at St. Philip’s Church. Purchase tickets for $25 here.
  • The Naval Base Memorial is free + open to the public. The memorial includes an open pavilion which mimics the side of a ship, lighted flag poles, brick pavers displaying the names of memorial donors, statues, sculptures, + other relics to honor the thousands of men + women who served their country.

How are you honoring the lives of our heroes today? Let us know what you’re up to by using #CHStoday on your posts.

Enjoy your day, Charleston. And thanks to all who have served our country so we *can* enjoy this day.
