ICYMI: Southern Living selected the Lowcountry for its 2024 Idea House. The home sits on the banks of the Kiawah River, a waterfront community on Johns Island. This one-of-a-kind home will be featured in the magazine’s September issue, officially on newsstands Aug. 23.

What is an Idea House?

This initiative allows the magazine to bring its ideas to life with landscape architects, interior designers, and builders. Each year the houses are built in a different Southern city.

The Lowcountry Idea House

We had the opportunity to explore and admired all of the Lowcountry details that make the home unique. Surrounded by stunning views, the farmhouse is 4,400 sqft and honors the Lowcountry by featuring many local craftsmen and women, artisans, and designers.

The Idea House’s interior designer Allison Elebash explained the importance of involving local artisans and makers in this project since Charleston + surrounding areas have so many.

Check out our sneak peek of the home. When you visit, keep an eye out for local makers like Charleston-based Andrea Cayetano-Jefferson of Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets and home textile designer Rebecca Atwood.

The house is open for public tours through Sunday, Dec. 22, on Thursdays through Sundays. A portion of each ticket is donated to three local charities: Communities In Schools of SC, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, and the Emanuel Nine Memorial Foundation.
